Take Back the Turf – 100 Acre Challenge

“Take back the Turf” is a landscape transformation strategy aimed at inexpensively transitioning conventionally managed lawn into highly biodiverse and water conserving groundcover suitable for commercial, institutional, and industrial non-functional turf areas.

Unlike the current practice of removing and replacing existing grass, it uses a conventional lawn over-seeding technique with a multi-species and flower-filled seed mix designed to enhance the performance of the existing turf and convert it into a low water polyculture groundcover.

Resilient Alternatives to Non-Functional Commercial Turf

As water conservation becomes a greater issue across the country, states and water providers are looking to reduce or eliminate the use of  potable water on commercial non-functional turf.  Unfortunately, historical solutions to such a demand usually result in expensive, unsightly and/or environmentally detrimental consequences.

However, there are other options.  Join G3 expert Pamela Berstler, as she discusses resilient options to replacing the turf, including the radical idea of keeping the existing lawn in place and creating a “Polyculture” green functional space.
